A water filter cartridge removes harmful substances. The cartridge contains a bulk charge of iron-doped ion exchange granules. The ion exchange agent is iron oxide and/or iron hydroxide or an iron III salt solution. The filtration agent is contained within a cartridge housing with a centerline inlet and outlet. The ion exchange agent is Purolite C-145 (RTM), Lewatit (R) SP 112 (RTM), Lewatit (R) TP 207 (RTM)or Lewatit (R) TP 208 (RTM).
