The lens of one camera is arranged so that the optical center of a light reflecting lens is placed in a horizontal plane which extends through the lower part of the end of the wheel rim (3). The optical axis of the lens is placed in an intermediate position between the lower part of the rim (3) and a reference slot formed in the internal lateral surface of the wheel. An arithmetic unit calculates the wheel dimensions from images taken by the two cameras. The optical photographic unit includes: (a) a first laser light source (10) arranged, in front or rear relative to a pair of wheels mounted on a track, so as to illuminate with a thin light beam a range covering the track rolling wheel rim (4) and the track overlapping rim (3); a first camera which takes an image of the range lit by the first light source; a second laser light (11) is placed on the side of an internal lateral surface of the wheel so as to illuminate a range covering a lower part of an end of the rim (3) and a reference slot (5) formed in the lateral internal surface of this wheel in a direction perpendicular to the range, and; a second camera which takes an image of the second range which covers the lower part of the track overlapping wheel rim and the reference slot.
