The vertical acceleration (2) of the aircraft is measured, combined (5) with a composite and sent to an integrator (6) to produce a speed estimate. A calculator (9) measures the difference between a vertical speed estimate derived from a barometric measurement (3A) and the estimate from the integrator and sends the result to two filters (10,11) and a crest removal unit (8A) which produce the composite. An Independent claim is also included for: equipment to implement the method including an accelerometer, a barometer, a composite calculator and sum and difference calculators.
