Elimination of sulfur and nitrogen compounds from a hydrocarbon mixture by a) Contacting the mixture with a non-aqueous ionic liquid of general formula Q+A- containing an alkylating agent, so as to form sulfur or nitrogen ionic derivatives soluble in the ionic liquid ; and b) Separation of the ionic liquid by decantation.
