Elimination of sulfur and, if need be, nitrogen compounds from hydrocarbon mixtures by :- a) Contacting the hydrocarbon mixture with a non-aqueous ionic liquid Q+A- containing an alkylating agent, to form ionic sulfur and nitrogen compounds soluble in the ionic liquid ; b) Separation of the ionic liquid from the treated hydrocarbon mixture by decantation.
