The sample is subjected to membrane microfiltration, through a mean pore diameter of 11 mum, to obtain a retentate which largely contains the epithelial cells. The cells are recovered by treating the membrane with a solution containing trypsin. Microfiltration comprises one or more stages of microfiltration followed by washing of the retentate. After membrane filtration at a mean pore diameter of 11 mum, a buffer solution is used for washing. This dissolves any crystals of urates present in the retentate. Microfiltration is achieved by aspiration of the filtrate.
