The method involves calculating a value of physical size which is not an input variable of a physical model, from the model. The calculated value is compared with a measured value of the physical size. An input variable or an internal size of the physical model is monitored according to a deviation between the calculated and measured values, to correct the input variable or the internal size of the physical model. An independent claim is also included for a device of controlling a thermal engine.
