PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently and inexpensively provide an excavation stabilizing fluid scarcely causing putrefaction, free from toxicity and excellent in viscosity and drainage and further provide an excavation technique using the excavation stabilizing fluid.;SOLUTION: The excavation stabilizing fluid comprises a water-soluble polymer (P) having ≥500,000 weight-average molecular weight and obtained by polymerizing a monomer group composed of (A) 20-99 mol% (meth)acrylic acid (salt) and (B) 1-80 mol% specific (meth)acrylate-based monomer as essential components and optionally (C) 0-20 mol% other monomer copolymerizable with components (A) and (B), and water. It is preferable that the weight average molecular weight of the water-soluble polymer (P) is 700,000-4,000,000 and the insoluble content is ≤5 wt.%.
