PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide automatic layout phase recovery, independently of whether a CAP(carrierless amplitude modulation/phase modulation) signal is sent or a QAM(quadrature amplitude modulation) signal is sent by updating a tap coefficient of an equalizer, based on a hybrid cost function. ;SOLUTION: This receiver has two operating modes as a CAP mode and a QAM mode, and only one equalizer 155 is used for both the CAP operating mode and the QAM operating mode. The receiver 150 consists of an equalizer 155, a rotator 165 and a duplicate mode algorithm component 160. Then a tap coefficient of the equalizer 155 is updated as a function of signals at, both sides of the rotator 165. That is, a hybrid cost function for providing automatic layout phase recovery is used.
