The invention relates to a guidewire installation (20) including a guidewire (24), an optical fiber (28), and an insulation jacket (30). The guidewire has a distal end (32), a proximal end (34), and a hole (26) extending through the metal wire between the distal and proximal ends. The optical fiber also includes a distal end (36) and a proximal end (38) and is disposed within the guide wire hole. The optical fiber extends at least between the distal and proximal ends of the guidewire. The insulation jacket is around an outside diameter of the guidewire, and is applied so that the distal ends of the guidewire and optical fiber are exposed.
