3-Phenyl pyridoindolone derivatives (I) are new. 3-Phenyl pyridoindolone derivatives (I), their acid addition salts, hydrates and solvates are new. R1 = H, 1-4C alkyl, -(CH2)nCOO-(1-4C alkyl), or -(CH2)nCOONR6R7; R2 = H or 1-4C alkyl; R3 = phenyl (monosubstituted by OH, HO-CH2, COOH, 1-4C alkoxy carbonyl, hydroxyiminomethyl, 1-4C alkyl sulfonyl, CF3, SH, 1-4C alkylthio, CN, (CH2)mNR6R7, or CONR6R8), phenyl (substituted 2-5 times by halogen, 1-4C alkyl, CF3, OH, HOCH2, SH, 1-4C alkylthio, 1-4C alkyl sulfonyl, CN, (CH2)mNR6R7, or CONR6R8), or benzodioxolyl; R4, R5 = H, halogen, OH, 1-4C alkyl or alkoxy, CF3, 1-4C alkoxy carbonyl, CN or O-(CH2)nR6R7; R6 = H or 1-4C alkyl; R7 = H or 1-4C alkyl; or NR6R7 = piperidyl, morpholinyl, pyrrolidinyl, piperazinyl, or 4-methyl piperazin-1-yl; R8 = H, 1-4C alkyl, or -(CH2)n-NR6R7; or NR6R8 = piperidyl, morpholinyl, pyrrolidinyl, piperazinyl, or 4-methylpiperazin-1-yl; n = 1-3; and m = 0 or 1;
