The invention relates to eukaryote DNA sequences for the native protoporfirinogenoxidase (protox) or for modified forms of the enzyme which are tolerant to herbicides.The invention also relates to plants with modified protox activity which confer tolerance to herbicides. these plants may be reproduced of carried out by genetic engineering for the resistance to protox inhibitors, by the way of the mutation of the native protox gene in a resistant form or by increased levels of the native protox gene expression, or may be obtained by the transformation with the coding sequence of the eukaryote and prokaryote - modified protox gene or with prokaryote protox sequences of the native type, which present tolerance to herbicides.
