Process for the disproportion of an aromatic carboxylic acid to give the corresponding salt and its isomers, comprising: a) Preparing a disproportion feed comprising a mixture of finely dispersed solid salt of an excess base and an aromatic acid by the steps of : 1) Reacting said aromatic acid in the presence of an excess base selected from the group consisting of carbonates and bicarbonates to form a salt, said excess base being in the molar range of 1, 01, 2, 0. 2) Dry said salt mixture, so that said solid salt, when dried, contains less than 1000 ppm of water; and b) Disproportionating said solid salt mixture in the presence of a disproportionation catalyst.
