A process for the hydrodebromination of an aromatic carboxylic acid of molten crude product prepared by oxidation in liquid phase of an aromatic compound having at least one alkyl or acyl oxidizable group, in the presence of a heavy metal oxidation catalyst, thereby forming a mixture of oxidation reaction product containing said aromatic carboxylic acid of crude product, said hydrodebromation process comprising: recovering the mixture of aromatic carboxylic acid from crude product; wash the mixture of aromatic carboxylic acid of crude product with water; and treating the mixture of aromatic carboxylic acid with hydrogen on a catalyst selected from group VIII of the Periodic Table, optionally on a support, thereby producing aromatic carboxylic acids having significantly reduced bromine content.
