Dosage form comprising: (a) an external wall that defines an interior compartment; (b) a therapeutic agent within the inner compartment; (c) at least one exit hole formed with laser in the outer wall; and (d) a barrier layer disposed between the outer wall and the inner compartment in at least one region corresponding to at least one exit orifice, in which the barrier layer comprises a film-forming polymer and a material that does not substantially absorbs laser energy from a type of laser selected under selected operating conditions of the laser used to form at least one exit hole formed with laser, the material being present in the barrier layer in an amount of 5 to 80 percent in weight, such that the barrier layer is not ablated during the formation of at least one exit hole formed with laser.
