A topical composition suitable for application to the skin comprising 0, 01-2% by weight of a cationic polymer, 0, 005 3% by weight of antioxidant vitamin E and 0, 002 9% by weight of precursor vitamin E, wherein the ratio of vitamin E compared to vitamin E precursor is in the range of 3: 1 to 1: 3, sufficient to cause an effect selected from the group consisting of a. a level of vitamin E on the skin significantly above the amount of vitamin E on the skin not treated with vitamin E for a period of at least 6 hours, preferably at least 15 hours after application of the composition containing such vitamin. b. a reduction of lipid peroxide levels brought about by an insult to the skin wherein the skin is treated with the said vitamin containing composition prior to said aggression. c. one vitamin E on the skin level, which is significantly above the level of vitamin E on the skin caused by oral ingestion of the vitamin, or d. a combination of any of a, b, or c.
