PROCESS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF GEL-FREE ETHYLENE/VINYL ACETATE COPOLYMERS WITH A HIGH CONTENT OF COPOLYMERIZED VINYL ACETATE AND A HIGH MOONEY VISCOSITY

Gel-free ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymers with ahigh content of copolymerized vinyl acetate and a highMooney viscosity are produced by carrying out the poly-merizationin solution in the presence of 20 to 45% byweight tert.butanol, based on the reaction solution, attemperatures of 50 to 80°C and under pressures of 300 to450 bar using azo compounds in a cascade of stirredreactors with an average residence time of the reactionsolution in the reactor cascade of 5 to 9 hours and aconversion of 50 to 70% by weight, based on the vinylacetate used. The ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymersproduced by the process according to the invention may beused for the production of vulcanizates having improvedmechanical properties.
