The invention discloses methods wherein a nucleic acid molecule (CRASH) with the nucleic acid sequence SEQ ID NO:1 is used for the evaluation of the risk of tumor progression and/or metastasis, primarily in uterine, mammary, prostatic or ovarian carcinoma. Uses of the CRASH protein of SEQ ID NO:2 are also provided. A kit for determining whether cells in a tumor sample has metastatic potential is provided.
