Compensation of mutual coupling in array antenna systems

The method operates in transmit mode an array antenna system including a plurality of antenna elements (1-N) so that the signal radiated from the antenna has a desired antenna radiation pattern, by :calculating, for each array element, the required pre-perturbed incident excitation (ai) to compensate for the effects of mutual coupling with the other elements of the array, whereas, the required pre-perturbed incident excitation (ai) for an array element generates, after mutual coupling, a resultant desired voltage (vi) on the array element which, in combination with the other compensated elements of the array, produces the desired antenna radiation pattern, andapplying to each element of the array, the calculated pre-perturbed incident excitation (ai) for said element.
