Process for the synthesis of hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane in 2 steps from a primary amine

Production of hexanitro hexaazaisowurtzitane (I), i.e. 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaaza-tetracyclo[5.5.0.0 5.9.03.11]dodecane, involves reacting an alpha ,beta -dicarbonyl compound with a primary amine, and directly nitrating the resulting hexa-substituted hexaazaisowurtzitane in a single step. An independent claim is also included for 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexa-R-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaaza-tetracyclo[5.5.0.0 5.9.03.11]dodecanes produced as above. R : a heteroarylmethyl, allyl, propargyl, trimethylsilylmethyl, naphthylmethyl or sulfenyl group.
