An additive for a non-aqueous electrolyte solution of an electric double layer capacitor which contains a compound capable of releasing a material inhibiting combustion at the time of the combustion of the solution, characterized in that the material inhibiting combustion is a phosphine oxide compound having a P-F bond and/or a P-NH2 bond in its molecule. The above additive for a non-aqueous electrolyte solution of an electric double layer capacitor contains a compound which can release a combustion-inhibiting material exhibiting excellent effect for inhibiting combustion, at the time of combustion.
