A pulley for a safety line has a one piece construction with a U-shaped upper end (12, 14) through which the fixed safety line (24) is threaded and with a pivot mounted safety brake (18). The bottom end (16) of the pulley is solid and has a hole (26) for securing the shorter personal safety line (28). The centre of mass of the pulley ensures that the solid section is always set downwards and with the pulley running free along the fixed safety line. The safety brake is spring loaded and its pivot axis links the two parts of the U-profile.
