The shift element for a power shift transmission includes an inner disc carrier (4), an outer disc carrier, a piston (8) hydraulically operated against the force of a return spring (9), and at least one damping element (12,13). The torque build-up in the shift element is modulated by the damping element during the whole slip phase of the shift element. The damping element through the piston displacement during the whole slip phase of the shift element absorbs part of the piston force and is designed to deform by piston movement during the whole closing action of the shift element.
