PURPOSE: Provided are the water soluble extract of Solanum genus plants which inhibits the proliferation of cancer/tumor cells, a preparation process thereof, and a pharmaceutical composition containing the water soluble extract as an active ingredient. The cancer includes liver cancer, lung cancer and breast cancer. CONSTITUTION: The water soluble extract of Solanum genus plants is characterized in that the Solanum genus plants are essentially composed of 60%-90% of solamargine and solasonine. It is obtained by hydrolyzing Solanum genus plants with acid; precipitating hydrolysates thereof by using base; and extracting them with chloroform, alcohol and water as an extracting solvent.
