PURPOSE: A detergent amount judging method of a washing machine is provided to decide the exact amount of detergent input according to each water level and to form an optimal washing pattern by deciding the amount of input detergent by changing a detergent amount reference value required according to the water level. CONSTITUTION: In a detergent amount judging method of a washing machine that water is supplied in stages according to the amount of the laundry inputted to the washing machine and the amount of detergents is decided to meet proper conductivity and temperature conditions detected by an electrode sensor and a temperature sensor according to a detergent amount sensing table, the detergent amount judging method of a washing machine is composed of steps for feeding the water up to a water level set according to the amount of the laundry(S11,S12,S13); changing a detergent amount reference value according to each water level(S14,S15,S16); and selecting the amount of detergent satisfying conductivity and temperature conditions from the detergent amount sensing table for the changed detergent amount reference value(S17).
