A character input apparatus using direction keys and a method thereof are provided to enable a user to simply input characters and easily input every character through smaller number of times of manipulation. A character input key(2) includes an up key, a down key, a left key, a right key, and a center key. A code table stores character codes of basic consonants and single vowels allocated correspondingly to the character input key(2) so as to be selected by inputting the character input key(2) two times. When the character input key is inputted two times, a controller(1) first selects a corresponding character code from the code table, and if the selected character code is a basic consonant and when a double consonant conversion manipulation is subsequently inputted from the character input key(2), the controller(1) converts the selected character code into a double consonant character code. When the selected character code is a single vowel and if a subsequently inputted key is the same single vowel manipulation, the controller(1) converts the corresponding single vowel into a middle vowel. In the state of the single vowel or the middle vowel, when a different vowel is inputted, the controller(1) forms a diphthong by combining them.
