An extract of Berberis koreana Palibin(Korean berberry) having protective effect for neuronal cells and a composition for prevention and treatment of brain disease containing the same extract are provided, which Berberis koreana Palibin extract inhibits apoptosis of neuronal cells occurred at cerebral ischemia, and is not harmful to human, so that the Berberis koreana Palibin extract can be useful for prevention and treatment of brain disease caused by apoptosis of neuronal cells. The extract of Berberis koreana Palibin(Korean berberry) having protective effect for neuronal cells is produced with one or more extraction solvents selected from water, C1-C5 alcohol, hexane, ethylacetate, chloroform and a mixture thereof.
