To give a continuous production of a multilayer web material (16), with an outer cladding (15) over a nonwoven (3'), a nonwoven (3) is initially formed at a given speed, with the upright fibres in an unbonded and uncalibrated state, in a material where the standing fibres at right angles to the nonwoven surface form at least 20% of the fibre content and pref. 50-70%, together with bi-component bonding fibres. The material (3), at a second speed, is subjected to heat and pressure by contact with smooth guide belts heated by contact and/or radiant heat (7) and contact cooling (8). The heat fuses the bi-component fibres with the other fibres, while the nonwoven is compressed and calibrated to the required thickness, and its surfaces are fused and polished. The outer cladding material (15) is fed to the bonded nonwoven (3'), together with an adhesive (14), at the same speed as the travel through the heat bonding stage, into a laminating stage (9) where the cladding (15) is bonded to the stabilised nonwoven (3').
