A method for receiver-side determining a used at the modulation in a communication system with adaptive modulation, in which– at the transmitter end at least two different modulation methods (qpsk, 16 - qam, 64 - qam or mod0, mod1,...), in particular with a convolution encoding (ofdm) for an error protection, is provided, and to modulate for data to be transmitted in succession (d) in each case individually sub-carriers adaptively one of the at least two modulation method is selected and symbolwise for providing of symbols (s2) is used,– on the receiver side the modulated received symbols (s2), and with the use of the at least two modulation methods associated demodulation process individually be demodulated sub-carriers, wherein in the case of a metric comparing demodulation results of the at least two the demodulation method, is in each case a same number of modulation symbols and data bits in trellis - node of a widened trellis - diagram are compared, and individually sub-carriers a demodulation process indicating a successful decoding is determined.
