A method of developing a system using virtual test, virtual trial and synthetic environment techniques, the method comprising a number of sequential stages (10, 12, 14, 16, 18) interacting with test processes (20, 22), to develop the system. In the first stage (10), a model of the system is defined according to the system requirements. The second stage (12) uses the model in a synthetic real-time environment to determine the performance of the system that is compared to the model power. The next two stages (14, 16) introduce hardware into the virtual real-time test, the virtual trial, and the synthetic environment to examine their impact on the performance of the system, where the environment is able to switch between software and hardware variables which are examined in the system. In the final stage (18), the system is examined in a real-time environment and the resulting performance compared to the model performance. In each sequential stage (10, 12, 14, 16, 18) the performance is processed by interactive processes (20, 22), as indicated by the arrows.
