Adjustment procedure for belt transport device of electrophotographic printer or copier to adjust for cross drift when belt is replaced

Position is determined for start position of adjustable roller at start of adjustment phase. Position is determined in test adjustment phase using test belt, so position allows cross drift of test belt to be below predetermined value. Individual tolerances of each belt transport unit are corrected in the test adjustment phase using corrected location of adjustable roller. Determines correct location for adjustable roller in a test adjustment phase to set belt transport unit. In test phase individual tolerances of each belt transport unit are corrected using corrected location of adjustable roller, to compensate for cross drift. Characteristic start location for the belt transport unit only needs to be set once. When belt needs to be changed, locations for adjustable roller, determined in test adjustment phase are used if new belt is very similar to tested belt. If new belt is different from test belt, position of adjustable roller must only be corrected as much as the new belt deviates from test belt.
