Sheets (1) accumulate in a stack (9) above which a sorting unit (5) may form an intermediate stack. A front edge stop (3) and a sample sheet stop (7) have striking faces positioned parallel to the front side (4) of the stack. Both the front edge stop and sample sheet stop are pivotable about a shaft (2) to a position that allows withdrawal of sheets in the intermediate stack.
