The engine has an engine braking device, especially a compression brake, an exhaust gas turbocharger with exhaust gas turbine (4) and compressor, an operating turbine driven by the engine exhaust and coupled to the engine by a gearbox, and a bypass arrangement for the operating turbine. The turbocharger has a control element that varies the flow of exhaust gas to the turbine wheel (17) so the revolution rate of the exhaust gas turbine increases in engine braking mode and takes over the function of a sliding element (27) so that a bypass opening (26) is closed in with the control element open and vice-versa.
