The safety device (1) has an optical sensor displaced in conjunction with the moving component (2) of the machine, during the working stroke, for optical monitoring of a safety zone. The optical sensor device has a transmitter (5) for providing projection light beams (4) passing through the safety zone to obtain a projection pattern on a projection medium (6), detected via a camera (7), coupled to an evaluation unit (11), for generation of an object detection signal dependent on the detected projection pattern.
