A piezoelectric ultrasonic transducer is mounted in the wall of the container and generates a pulse of defined length and amplitude for monitoring the presence of fluid in the space behind it. A piezoelectric element transmits ultrasound pulses which propagate in the container wall as Rayleigh and/or transversal waves, and are received. An independent claim is included for an apparatus for carrying out the method.
