The main profile for the window or door frame is made from a hard highly-insulating inorganic insulation material (1) such as foamed glass which is surrounded by a tensile strip (2) located on the frame on the side remote from the window pane. The strip can be made from metal or from one or more fibre-reinforced plastics strip to form a surround. The fitments and locking parts can be formed on the strip. The surface of the window frame profile can be coated with a gas or moisture proof coating.
