Use is claimed as additives in agents for the surface modification of substrates of a polymer composition comprising: (1) a hydrophobic polymer containing vinyl acetate together with crotonic and/or methacrylic acid of the core/shell type and/or obtained by polymerization in presence of a nonionic protective colloid; and (2) cationic polymers, polyvalent metal ions and/or cationic surfactants as cation-modifiers.
