The system has a portable data carrier (1), or electronic ticket, with an integrated circuit (4) and a memory (5) and a terminal (2) that communicates with the data carrier. The memory has a contingent of discount units which are protected against unauthorized access. For each discount unit a ticket is reduced by a fraction of the full price. The number of discount units can be adjusted dependent on the terminal unit.
