Method for operating a vehicle combustion engine in which a fuel-air mixture with a predefined lambda value is fed to the combustion engine, and dependent on a knocking regulating system (2), which detects knocking and adjusts the ignition timing accordingly, measured fuel qualities are used to determine a required fuel-air mixture for a cold engine start. The invention also relates to a corresponding device for implementation of the inventive method.
