The method involves operating an internal-combustion engine (1) of a vehicle e.g. motor vehicle, with alcohol or alcohol/petrol mixing fuels from a fuel system. The system has a storage tank (23) for the alcohol or alcohol/petrol mixing fuels and a storage tank (9) for a starting fuel, which has sufficient ignitability in order to be utilized during cold starting of the engine. A gaseous fuel such as butane or propane, is utilized as the starting fuel during the cold starting of the engine. The gaseous fuel is stored in commercial, exchangeable one-way gas cartridges.
