The chain guide has first and second guide elements (1,3) to engage on first and second chain sections (6a,b). A coupling structure connects the elements to form a single component. The structure has first and second wall elements (2,12) defining a chain guide cartridge (K). The first element may be integral with the structure, and the second element is fastened to it pivoted via a sleeve arrangement. A journal part (9,9') projecting through the arrangement is fitted rigidly into an engine end wall. A resetting device applies a resetting force to move the second guide element against the chain (6). The coupling structure is of a plastic material.
