The automatic gearbox control (1) has a hydraulic control unit (3) for the automatic gearbox (2) and an evaluation unit (4) with a timer switch receiving sensor signals from a brake pedal sensor (5), a gas pedal sensor (6) and a vehicle velocity sensor (7). The evaluation unit incorporates a recognition device (8) with a further timer switch, providing a control signal for the hydraulic control unit for opening a forwards gear clutch upon recognition of a defined situation in which the measured signals from the gas pedal sensor and the vehicle velocity sensor have low values after an initial stop and the brake pedal sensor provides a continuous signal for a calibrated interval after a second stop.
