The internal combustion engine tickover speed adjustment system prevents stalling when the power steering pump is activated. The system has a steering angle sensor and a computer raising the tickover speed when the steering wheel is turned. The tickover speed is raised when the steering wheel is turned at a rate of more than 100 degrees/second. When the steering input is finished, the tickover speed remains high for a given time, e.g. 3 seconds, and then drops to its low values. When the vehicle is moving forward above a given speed, e.g. 3 km/hr, the tickover speed remains high all the time.
