Braking system for utility vehicle has displacement pump coupled to front end of internal combustion engine crankshaft to act as retarder by pumping engine cooling fluid through throttle valve
The internal combustion engine (1) has a change- speed transmission (2) and output shaft (3) connected to the rear end of the crankshaft. The positive displacement pump (5) acting as a retarder (5a) is connected to the front end of the crankshaft (4). The pump draws engine cooling fluid or a separate cooling fluid through an inlet pipe (6) and passes it via a high-pressure outlet pipe (8) to a throttle valve (9) and to a cooling radiator (7). The throttle valve has an actuator (10) connected to a control computer (12). The computer receives inputs from a brake pedal (13) and a control lever (14).
