The folding roof (1) for a private car has front (2) and rear (3) sections hinged together. The front section has a reinforced fastening (10) at its front edge engaging the top edge of the windscreen (7). The rear section is hinged to the rear of the front section. The rear section is hinged (4) to the vehicle bodywork behind the rear seat. It can fold down about its rear edge and can slide rearward. The front section can hinge upward until it is standing upright to act as a rollover safety bar and can then fold rearwards.
