A spring system for a hinged cover in a vehicle has a spiral spring (4) wound around the hinge axis (6) of the cover and with one end fixed and the other end connected by a thrust element (16) to a hinge flap (8) of the cover. The spring is positioned in the otherwise dead space between two hinges of a cover leaving space for a damper between the vehicle and the cover. The spring force is set to provide a residual tension in the fully open setting of the cover.
