The rack-and-pinion gear (10) for especially a motor vehicle's steering system has a rack housing assembly (12) with at least one circumferential wall encompassing the gear rack (16). Within the housing a pinion (20) is rotatable in a bearing, a gear rack meshing with the pinion moves back and forth in a longitudinal guide (14), and a piston rod (26a) is movable in a cylinder and connected to the gear rack.
