The simplified servo steering mechanism for a vehicle has the servo piston rod (10) forged in one piece with the piston (26,26A). The blank for the workpiece is round bar or tube and the piston is formed by forging the rod between moulds from both ends, followed by machine finishing. The one-piece construction provides a cost saving in workpiece parts and connectors. The piston end faces are shaped into the contour of the rod. The forging may be performed by hammering or pressing. USE/ADVANTAGE - One-piece construction of piston, piston rod and rack in vehicle steering gear gives low mfr. cost.
