A ballast device (1) for a gas discharge lamp has a voltage generating device to which the gas discharge lamp is connected, a switch off device (27) joined to the voltage generating device, an average value detection circuit which is connected to the gas discharge lamp in order to tap the voltage present at the discharge lamp (2) and to generate an average voltage value and is connected to the switch off device (27) to send a switch off signal to the switch off device (27) when the detected voltage average value deviates by more than a permissible tolerance value from a specified value.
