The ballast (10) has a rectification circuit (104) for producing direct current (DC) voltage (U1) from mains voltage (UN) and rested at a mains connection (107). A switching controller (105) e.g. down converter, is arranged downstream to the rectification circuit. A commutator switch (106) is arranged downstream to the switching controller, and produces secondary alternating voltage from another DC voltage (U2), where the secondary alternating voltage is supplied to an output (108) of the ballast. A control circuit (102) stands in connection with the controller and the switch. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an alternating current-operated gas-discharge lamp.
